Title : High Temperature Tribology and Wear Temperature can have a significant effect on the frictional behaviour and the extent of wear damage of metallic components.

This phenomenon presents a complex nature involving thermal, microstructural and surface interaction and process parameters.

Current industry requires the design of optimized forming tools for long-duration, extreme environment applications with low friction and small wear rate.

The objectives of this thesis will be to obtain enhanced understanding of the effect of temperature on friction and wear processes for efficient friction control and minimised wear at high temperature.

In order to do so, the research work will be focused on :

  • Experimental characterization and understanding of the tribological behaviour of hot forming tool steels at room and elevated temperatures.
  • To investigate and understand the mechanisms governing friction and wear at different temperatures.
  • To explore and test the potential of certain surface modification technologies
  • To explore and test the potential of certain high temperature lubricants
