Job purpose :

The Field Production and Research team is looking for an experience scientist to help us developing our research program for vegetables in EAME.

The position will be based in Syngenta’s R&D station in El Ejido, Spain.

The job requires a high level of working independence since the team is spread across countries. In this role you will closely work different business functions to master the production of our inbred parent lines insuring a successful technology transfer and implementation in our seed production farms.

You must possess an outstanding scientific research background and a good level of project and stakeholder management experience.

Travelling to the production areas in Morocco and Kenya will be expected as part of research projects.

Accountabilities :

  • In collaboration with breeding R&D and Production and Supply to evaluate and improve producibility assessment of inbred lines early during hybrid advancement.
  • To succeed in this endeavour the candidate will have to build a strong working relationship with R&D as well as with production teams in different countries.

  • To identify seed production bottle necks and challenges and translate them into research projects leading to improved crop management and production protocols.
  • To actively scout for breakthrough production technologies leading to process simplification, lower costs, superior seed quality, yield improvement and stability.
  • To provide agronomical and crop management support to our seed production teams in Morocco, Kenya and Israel for vegetable crops including tomato, pepper, and cucurbits.
  • The candidate must be proficient and independent with own trials experimental design, data collection, data processing and statistical analysis of medium to large datasets.
  • Remote management and monitoring of trials will be expected.

  • To coordinate and supervise directly or indirectly through third parties field and laboratory activities such as planting, crop management, plot harvest, and post-harvest sample management.
  • To assist team leader in analyzing data, presenting reports, preparing presentations, coordinating discussion meetings, always supported by hard data and solid statistics
  • To present the agronomic information generated to key stakeholders. This information could be presented through diverse ways, formal and informal, with the ability to communicate to technical and non-technical audience.
  • Qualifications

    Qualifications and Experience :

  • A PhD in agronomy, plant biology / physiology / breeding or relevant related plant sciences discipline
  • Professional experience in project management or project leading is required
  • Experience in vegetable production for fresh market or commercial seeds is an advantage
  • Advanced knowledge in DOE (Design of Experiments) and statistical analysis
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English (to interact globally)
  • Fluent in Spanish (to interact locally)
  • Additional information :

  • Travelling up to 25% trial visits in field presence
  • Full time, permanent employee

  • Must be able to work legally, without visa support in the country.
