The Project will focus on two aspects, located in different agronomically and ecologically different environments : (a) Sustainable intensification in rice cultivation in the Ebro Delta (DE).
Currently there is monoculture of rice and fallow in winter. The proposal is to replace the fallow with some winter crop compatible with planting rice in the summer, such as ryegrass or protein pea.
b) Diversification alternatives in the irrigated areas of the Ebro Valley (VE). Search for winter crops (rapeseed, pea, winter cereals) as main crops and their inclusion in rotations with corn or summer forage crops teff).
Project Goals :
i) To quantify the productivity of crops according to crop diversification strategies in the irrigated areas of the Ebro Valley.
ii) To determine the water and nutrients use efficiencies under different situations of crop diversification. (iii) To determine environmental changes on soil quality and C fixation of the studied strategies.
iv) To assess the incidence of diversification on crop health aspects. (v) To evaluate the usefulness of remote sensing techniques as an approximation to agronomic assessments.
