Regulatory Legal Advisor BP Integrated Supply & Trading (IST) is BP’s energy trading division, responsible for physical and financial trading and supply to and from BP’s Upstream and Downstream assets.
We are looking to recruit a lawyer qualified in Spain to join International Gas's European Gas and Power team based in Madrid.
The successful candidate will be part of International Gas's Southern Europe team based in Madrid. They will be responsible for regulatory affairs in respect of the Spanish power business and will work with the existing regulatory affairs resource in Madrid who is responsible for natural gas.
They will liaise closely with, and receive support from, International Gas's Regulatory Affairs team based in London.
If you join our team, you may have the following responsibilities :
Interpret external market and regulatory developments in Spanish power market and provide advice to management of the impacts on business opportunities;
Influence legislative and regulatory change in support of BP commercial activity in Spanish power market both directly with relevant authorities and through industry associations;
Act as regulatory consultant on live projects and transactions, finding innovative ways to recognise and manage regulatory risk;
Identify commercial opportunities through regulatory change;
Defend value in the face of adverse regulatory change.
Negotiate and advise on master and one-off natural gas, power and LNG in tank purchase and sale contracts;
Advise on natural gas and power transportation contracts and LNG capacity contracts;
Provide legal advice in respect of BP's interests as a shareholder in in the Bahia de Bizkaia power station;
Structure and advise on commodity based financially settled derivative products;
Advise on and structure financing and credit management tools in connection with commodity supply and purchase contracts;
Commodity Exchange, Clearing House and Brokerage terms.
In the Regulatory Legal Advisor role we have the following requirements :
At least 5 years’ energy or commodities legal experience either in house or in private practice,
Excellent drafting skills in both Spanish and English,
Effective communicator (both written and verbal) ability to communicate with BP staff, counterparties, government and regulatory authorities,
Client counselling and an ability to work internationally and with different cultures,
Ability to prioritise conflicting demands, operate effectively against short timelines and provide prompt and commercially focused advice,
Sound legal and business judgment,
An effective manager of external resources,
Strong team player with an ability to work under pressure, set own priorities and work with limited supervision,
Flexible and adaptable, in order to respond to a changing external environment and internal priorities,
Experience of energy trading or power purchase agreements,
Knowledge and experience of energy regulatory issues and the impact of regulation on energy businesses,
Knowledge of Spanish administrative and legislative processes and the regulatory framework,
Understanding of power markets and value chain.
