Context & Organisation

The Airline Sciences department is one of the digital transformation initiatives of Airbus. It is now integrated in D as a product and service line.

It aims at creating an airline digital twin, unifying views of design office, marketing, strategy and services about airline operations and strategic plannings.

The latest cloud computing technology is used for the product and services deliveries.

The Airline Sciences objective is to act as an advisor to bring airline operational representativity in all Airbus activities (pre-design, detailed design, marketing, guarantees, services).

By combining aircraft models, trajectory simulations and optimization, operational research, data analytics and artificial intelligence, the Airline Sciences team is able to deliver realistic aircraft performances, network schedules, cost evaluation and revenue calculation of a virtual Airline.

Following best IT practices and Continuous Integration / Continuous Deployment (CI / CD), the Airline Sciences team developed the Airline Digital Twin, a web application and a set API that can be used across all Airbus divisions.

Specifically in the frame of the air transport demand research, Airline Sciences aims to replicate all the commercial aspects that determine the airline’s revenues (by knowing the demand) in order to analyze the profitability of the business, designing the models to predict the air traffic by combining the latest techniques in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Market Analytics.

Recently the Airline Sciences team is testing and incorporating some new applications in order to increase the resolution and the accuracy of the current air traffic demand features to get a better evaluation of the airline’s revenues and the environmental footprint, looking for the most convenient balance between both.

The job position requires the ability to accurately specify the airline business use cases (high-level functional requirements, objects, activities and flow of actions a system should attain) in order to fulfill multiple airline business requirements and provide innovative airline centric solutions to airline challenges.

At the same time the position will be focused on framing and developing an innovative technical strategy based on a good knowledge of the data analytics to produce explainable, robust, fair & trustworthy predictions or simulations of the airline demand forecasting.

The mission is to provide strategic guidance on airline economics to improve and adapt the design, customization, and evaluation of the aircraft to the market conditions faced by the airline, increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of our marketing campaigns and becoming a key enabler for strategic business decision making within Airbus.

Main activities

The main accountabilities of the jobholder :

  • To provide technical assets in the frame of the AI, researching and delivering the models and applications to be incorporated on the Airline Sciences Digital Twin.
  • Transform the research results into a practical problem solution to add value to the air traffic demand applications.
  • Lead the technical integration of the applications to ensure a proper operational performance.
  • Following the Business Analyst requirements, to design the most appropriate solution to import, process, clean and test the data needed for the model build up.
  • Data sampling and quality analysis, to identify the robustness of the information and the potential outliers.
  • Design the data maintenance and database management system to ensure the robustness of the Airline Sciences applications.
  • Research, test and develop the best in class AI algorithms applied to the air traffic demand modeling.
  • Translate the Business Analyst requirements in a specific technical solution, coordinating the design and the development of the models with the project staff.
  • Setting strategic direction for innovation through the phases of initiation, development and implementation, playing a key role in driving the research, implementation and execution of air traffic demand simulation.
  • Active participation in the technical coordination forums with the rest of the project team.
  • Report to the project manager the results of the technical researches, including the validation of the solutions.
  • Lead the deployment of the AI models in the Airbus platform according to the standard methods and processes.

  • Good team player, who likes working in a collaborative environment at all levels in the company.
  • Excellent analytical skills, including communication and presentation competences.
  • Written and verbal communication skills, including the delivery of presentations to Airbus and external stakeholders (airlines, airports & regulatory authorities and other government agencies).
  • Specific skills

  • Engineering Bachelor or equivalent.
  • Strong background in Data Analytics.
  • Python / PySpark programming languages are mandatory, Java and / or SQL scripting might be desirable.
  • Machine Learning and related AI technologies.
  • Air Transport knowledge is desirable, specifically for the airline’s route forecasting (air traffic demand).
