Meta’s European Data Protection team is growing to meet this vision, and we are seeking a highly motivated and experienced team player to serve as Lead Data Protection Counsel based in one of our offices in London, Dublin, Hamburg, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Milan or Madrid.

The role of Lead Data Protection Counsel is a great opportunity for any candidate who is keen to tackle some of today’s toughest and important legal challenges in this cutting-edge area of law.

The successful candidate will be joining a growing international legal team and working on issues in a vibrant, fast-paced environment.

The role will focus on providing strategic advice to internal legal, product, operations, and business teams in order to identify and mitigate legal risk.

The ideal candidate will have experience advising on GDPR, ePrivacy, and general privacy regulatory compliance in respect of cutting-edge products, good judgment, a strong work ethic, and a keen interest in learning about new technologies.

Lead Counsel, EU Data Protection Responsibilities

  • Monitor, analyze and respond to developments in data protection and data security in the EU / EEA (i.e., new laws, regulations, important judgements, regulatory guidance, etc.
  • and provide practical legal advice in cross-functional, multinational projects to ensure Facebook’s compliance with applicable laws and to mitigate legal risks across multiple jurisdictions

  • Provide full-service support to the wider legal team on EU / EEA regulatory, litigation and security matters
  • Support policy, product legal, engineering, sales and other business teams with legal advice on matters at the intersection of data protection and other laws including for external communication and policy development
  • Liaise with regulators and outside counsel
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Lawyer qualified to practice law in at least one European jurisdiction
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant post qualification legal experience, including at a law firm, data protection or other relevant authority or prior in-house experience
  • In-depth knowledge of legal issues in the area of online social media platforms and messaging services, including an excellent understanding of data protection laws and in particular of GDPR and ePrivacy.
  • Excellent problem-solving, written and oral communication and interpersonal skills

  • Fluency in English
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • While we are open to candidates from all backgrounds, experience working with mobile, application development, social networking, machine learning, or other Internet technologies would be an advantage
  • Experience working directly with European data protection authorities and / or experience in data protection litigation a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in fast-paced environment and provide pragmatic and considered advice under tight deadline
  • The working language for this role will be English - knowledge of, or fluency in, German a plus
