Our R&D department has an exciting career opportunity for a Junior Research & Development Technician to reinforce our R&D Characterization team in Tarragona, Spain .

The Tarragona R&D Characterization laboratory provides characterization and testing support to internal and external clients in the areas of microscopy, spectroscopy, thermal and chromatography, and is an integral piece of Dow innovation.

The person in this position will work closely with Technicians, Research Scientists and engineers to continuously give support for P&SPH business and continuously focus on improving the technical capabilities of the laboratory.

The candidate must take ownership of the laboratory’s data and data quality and find ways to improve the efficiency of work processes.

Problem solving and team work skills are crucial for executing routing test procedures and in the development of new ones.

The candidate will also conduct R&D projects under the guidance of a Research Scientist.

Qualifications of personnel needed :

Strong preference in candidates who has interest and / or experience in research & development, in operation of lab equipment

Experience and ability to collect, analyse and interpret data is strongly preferred.

Interest and / or experience in technology areas such as analytical, chromatography, microscopy, thermal, weathering is strongly preferred.

Experience with characterization techniques and on-line analysers is beneficial.

Experience in calibration and operation of laboratory equipment is preferred.

Being open for collaboration with other technicians in different technology areas and open for learning new techniques and capabilities is strongly preferred.

Willingness to participate in global and local projects to implement new capabilities in the laboratory is preferred.

Good computer skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as problem solving skills.

Must be a team player and be able to work safely and independently in a self-directed team environment.

Ability to manage multiple tasks and have a sense of prioritization based on value and efficiency.

Language skills : English is mandatory, Spanish is a plus.

Key job responsibilities include :

The candidate should have good laboratory skills, ability and passion to learn new testing methods, flexibility to adapt tasks to meet client and lab needs, and be able to work in a fast-paced environment

Become familiar with the equipment and method requirements and be able to solve issues that arise

Conduct experiments to understand, communicate and continuously improve the capability of our methods and laboratory

Under the direction of a Research Scientist or lab coordinator, lead projects to advance the instrument and method capabilities.

Keep customers satisfaction high by delivering timely and quality data.

Lead initiatives to improve the overall lab performance and delivery of results to clients.

Prioritize and complete work based on relative importance and urgency.

Satisfy all safety and quality requirements of the department.

Conduct Research & Development projects under the direction of a Research Scientist and / or lab coordinator.

Implement and use quality assurance / quality control checks to ensure acceptable instrument performance and data quality.

Implement new test equipment and methods, working within the Quality and Safety system to write the operating procedures and training other team members

Coordinate projects or initiatives with other laboratories.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in the team with team members from diverse backgrounds is required.

The candidate should be able to interact well with Scientists, co-workers and leader and strive to meet the needs of stakeholders relating to the job scope.


A High School diploma (or equivalent) and 3 years of laboratory experience preferred.

CFGS in Analysis and Control or Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Chemical technology, Chemical engineering, Process Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering or related field is preferred.
