Are you an experienced Senior or Lead Software Engineer with a passion for mentoring other engineers, providing technical direction and guidance for a group of teams, and shipping software that delights customers?

We’re searching for a Staff Engineer who will help the Observability group build the next generation of observability experiences.

This group owns New Relic's Full-Stack Observability product offering and its purpose is to help engineers to visualize, analyze, and optimize their entire software stack from one place.

The group consists of multiple teams who own both customer-facing UIs and a number of backend services. The teams work with a multitude of technologies including Kotlin, Java, Go, React JS, and Apache Kafka.

Staff Engineers at New Relic move around to different teams, helping them solve the toughest problems. We believe the best staff engineers also help build a strong culture of engineering excellence based on open source methodologies.

What You’ll Do

Your main responsibility is to accelerate and de-risk the outcomes that Full-Stack Observability as a whole, commit to delivering.

Secondary responsibilities include bootstrapping new teams or initiatives, bridging gaps between teams, and mentoring for up and coming high talent engineers.

What it's like :

  • You will report to one of our Engineering Directors and partner with them. They will be relying on you to help them formulate their technical roadmap and assist their teams.
  • To succeed, you will need to rapidly learn and master the technologies and architecture of the systems in your group.

  • You’ll be constantly on the lookout for where you can be the highest impact. As a result you’ll be tapping into a variety of high-level leadership meetings as well as low-level team meetings to keep up to date.
  • You’ll interact with folks in all sorts of roles (not just engineers) including Directors, VPs, General Managers, Engineering Managers, Product Managers, and Designers.
  • Your work will be very varied, and you will engage in initiatives that may last from a few weeks to a few months.
  • A typical day will include anything from hands-on coding to architectural troubleshooting, to gathering data to support a decision or highlight a problem, to acting as a temporary team lead.
  • Your objectives can be high stakes and you’ll need creative approaches to realize them.
  • Your peers will be architects, staff engineers and other tech leads in the Full-Stack Observability group.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills. In particular listening skills and ability to work effectively with every personality type.
  • Self-directed and self-managing working style.
  • Able to engineer anywhere on the spectrum from fast proof on concept work to careful contributions in risk-averse problem domains.
  • Outstanding technical ability. Likely with proven experience as an engineer.
  • Strong operational experience. Ideally in a 24x7 SaaS environment.
  • Experience in a wide range of languages and technologies. Ideally with depth in Java, streaming architectures, and high throughput systems.
