Global Scientific Communications leads the development and implementation of communications strategies, publications plans and medical education initiatives across all Alexion AstraZeneca Rare Disease (RDBU) therapeutic areas.

This team works cross-functionally with key internal and external stakeholders to develop strategic high quality, accurate and impactful publications plans and deliverables (including abstracts, posters, oral presentations, and manuscripts) The team is also responsible for the development of scientific platforms / scientific stories in all therapeutic areas.

In addition to leading publications activities, Sci Comms partners with the Medical Directors’ team in each therapeutic area to plan, develop and implement medical educational activities, congress activities and other scientific programs that communicate important information to medical, scientific, and patient communities.

This is what you will do :

The Associate Director of Scientific Communications Excellence is responsible for ensuring operational excellence of activities managed and directed by the Global Scientific Communications team in the RDBU.

In this role, the Scientific Communications Excellence lead will support the Sci Comms team to ensure that the department develops and delivers all tactics efficiently and consistently, while adhering to all appropriate policies and regulations.

The Excellence lead will establish strong partnerships across the Sci Comms therapeutic team members and internal cross-functional stakeholders to support the implementation of best publication practices and processes including but not limited to optimal departmental efficiency, QC / audit readiness, consistency, and appropriate resource utilization, harmonization of collateral tools and materials including scientific stories and scientific platforms.

Additional efforts will focus on process harmonization for congress activities, budget management and harmonization with the Global Medical Affairs business operations team and lead.

This role reports to the VP, of Global Medical Communications on the Global Medical Affairs team.

You will be responsible for :

  • Supporting the Sci Comms team with design, implementation and management of solutions, processes, SOPs, and working practices with internally and externally facing scope
  • Ensuring the publication development process is consistent with internal policies, SOPs, and guidelines
  • Serving as a subject matter expert and be responsible for ongoing training on our auditable publication platform iENVISION.
  • Ensuring iENVISION is effectively utilized to support the review / approval process, archiving and maintenance of all publication projects.
  • Responsible for ongoing oversight of and serve as subject matter expert for other internal tools / systems utilized by the Sci comms team.
  • Working collaboratively with the Digital Innovation team to identify and communicate any gaps or need for updates, enhancements etc.
  • to optimize systems and processes that support publications and scientific communications activities

  • Supporting the team in the design and conduct of quality control monitoring and audit readiness procedures.
  • Serving as a subject matter expert on processes, policies, and SOP, and relevant tools / systems, including departmental databases, repositories, project planning, management tools, providing support to therapeutic teams to ensure consistent storage of documents and other materials.
  • Assisting with updating and development of Policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) as well as work practices (WPs).
  • Collaborating with the team to develop, track, analyze and report on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Supporting standardization across countries / regions to ensure consistent, compliant, and best in class scientific communications activities including, publications congress engagements and educational activities.
  • Collaborating with the team to ensure ongoing innovation in scientific communications including but not limited to plain language summaries, digital formats for posters / presentations, QR codes, repositories etc.
  • and keep up to date on trends in these areas.

  • Facilitating engagements with professional societies (e.g., ISMPP, MAPS etc.) and help to lead and coordinate abstracts submissions to professional meetings.
  • Working with the Sci Comms and Business Ops leads to help track budgets identify needs; participate in annual budget and forecasts.
  • You will need to have :

  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline with substantial relevant work experience
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience in a pharmaceutical company or Medical Communications agency
  • Work experience in a highly matrixed global organization
  • Experience in publication planning and management tools
  • Extensive experience in supporting adherence to compliance and guidelines around medical education and publications practices (ICMJE, GPP3, GDPR, Sunshine Act, etc.).
  • Strong inter-personal skills and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Strong customer focus and interpersonal skills.
  • Flexibility, positive attitude, strong ability to multitask, and to prioritize projects effectively and communicate at all levels within the company.
  • Proven meeting planning and facilitation skills.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams, and to execute multiple projects simultaneously, and in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • A global mindset and foreign languages are considered strong assets.
  • Able to create, track and plan timelines and budgets.
  • Ability to manage external vendors and provide clear, concise guidance.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, and experience working with document management systems (e.g., Datavision, SharePoint, Veeva Vault, etc.).
  • Some travel may be required to represent company at medical conferences, presentations, and other meetings.
  • The duties of this role are generally conducted in an office environment. As is typical of an office-based role, employees must be able, with or without an accommodation to : use a computer;
  • engage in communications via phone, video, and electronic messaging; engage in problem solving and non-linear thought, analysis, and dialogue;
  • collaborate with others; maintain general availability during standard business hours.

    We would prefer for you to have :

  • Advanced degree in Life Science (MS, PharmD, PhD, etc.)
  • CMPP certification
  • Experience in meeting management and congress planning
  • Background in rare disease
