Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Service Base in Valencia (UNSB-V) provides mission critical high availability information and communications technology support services to field operations and other United Nations agencies around the world via the provision of Application Hosting Services, Voice / Data / Video Connectivity Services and Satellite Communications Support Services.

The SGITT / SISMS / Bridge Operations Unit (BOU) is responsible for the Network Control Centre service and for managing and delivering related projects that satisfy the requirements of the Departments of Peacekeeping Operations and Field Support (DPKO / DFS) missions through the use of standard project management methods for Technology projects.

The Unit is seeking an intern (one) to start in and around January 2019 for a maximum period of 6 (six) months.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time (i.e. an intern is expected to work five days per week (8 : 00 a.m. - 4 : 30 p.m.

and there should be no expectation of employment within the UN after an internship. Interns shall not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, positions at the professional level and above carrying international recruitment status in the Secretariat for a period of six months following the end of their internship.

Responsibilities The internship will work under the direct guidance of the Chief, Bridge Operations Unit and Chief, SISMS at United Nations Information and Communication Technology Facility, Valencia (UNICTF) and will be responsible for the following duties :

  • Fully comply with DFS Project management framework, Standard Operation Procedures (SOPs), Working Guidelines and Best Practices
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policy including Financial Rules and Regulations, Procurement Manual, Organizational Directives and Administrative Instructions;
  • Assist in developing Business Cases to ensure alignment with Organization Strategy and ensure continued business justification;
  • Assist in creating required standard project's documents, such as : Project Mandate, Project Initiation Document, Risk and / or Issues Registry using the approved templates
  • Assist in developing and maintaining the Project Implementation Plan;
  • Assist in implementing project plans, meeting the established timelines and milestones within tolerances set by the project board;
  • Draft, prepare and update all related project documents as required in UNGSC Project Management as per the approved framework using ICTD project management tools and services;
  • Assist in the monitoring of projects on a regular basis, evaluating progress and quality, report issues and follow resolution process to ensure corrective actions are taken;
  • Assist to maintain the quality of all document / data to assure the integrity of a project;
  • Report, analyse data and communicate projects progress using approved reporting templates;
  • Support the coordination and schedule of activities related to the assigned project;
  • Organize meetings to communicate individuals roles, project expectations, and ensure that all project team members have the tools required to perform effectively;
  • Assist in the preparation and review of documentation for the Network Control Centre processes, procedures and guidelines.
  • Other duties as required.
  • During the internship, the incumbent will :

  • Experience working in a multinational section of the United Nations
  • Learn about the staff development programme at the United Nations
  • Be part of a dynamic team
  • Learn about and assist with other programmes in the Section as desired and required
  • More generally, interns shall :

  • 1.Observe all applicable rules, regulations, instructions, procedures and directives of the Organization notwithstanding their status as described in section 4 of the UN Internship Programme Administrative Instructions ST / AI / 2000 / 9 & ST / AI / 2005 / 11;
  • 2.Provide the receiving departments / offices with a copy of all materials prepared by them during the internship. The UN shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights and trademarks, with regard to material which bears a direct relation to,

  • 3. or is made in consequence of, the services provided under the internship. At the request of the UN, the interns shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to the UN in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law;
  • 4.Respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and of the receiving department / office and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to the UN;
  • 5.Unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate official in the receiving department / office, they may not communicate at any time to the media or to any institution, person, Government or any other external source any information which has become known to them by reason of their association with the UN or the receiving department / office, that they know or ought to have known has not been made public.

    They may not use any such information without the written authorization of the appropriate official, and such information may never be used for personal gain.

    These obligations also apply after the end of the internship with the UN; and

    6.Refrain from any conduct that would adversely reflect on the UN or on the receiving department / office and will not engage in any activity which is incompatible with the aims and objectives of the UN.

  • Shows willingness to learn new technology Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met :
  • Applicants must meet one of the following requirements : (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation from an academic programme

  • MBA / MSc student with at least one year of classes completed desirable;
  • Areas of studies should be in the field of project management, information technology, business administration, supply chain
  • management, engineering, architecture, logistics or communication

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Be a Certified Project Manager, PRINCE2 and / or PMP is desirable
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • and have demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme, however, a minimum of one (1) year of experience in the planning, design, development, implementation and / or maintenance of Information Systems, Information Technology systems or related areas is an asset.

    Languages English or French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship.

    Knowledge of another official United Nations language, or the language of the duty station is an advantage. Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-
