The Open Society Initiative for Europe (OSIFE) is part of the Open Society Foundations (OSF). OSIFE works at national, local and pan-

European level to support European progress towards open society goals though grant making, convening, advocacy and research mainly, and supports OSF’s foundations and thematic programs to achieve their Europe-focused strategies.

Job Profile

OSIFE is recruiting for a Divisional Director to lead its Governance & Debates Unit. This is a grant-making team composed of four Program Officers and five Program Specialists focusing on the European human rights and civil liberties field, and more specifically topics of state capture, reviving democracy in Eastern Europe, fair and effective policing and improving the access of civil society Policy debates .

The Division Director is responsible for exercising leadership, contributing to the effective functioning of the program overall, and building partnerships with others working across Europe for similar objectives.

The Division Director will perform any or all of the following and / or similar activities :

  • Responsible for all activities relating to broad areas of responsibility within the Regional Program for Europe (OSIFE) and OSF more broadly.
  • Responsible for strengthening connections with colleagues across the Foundations to assure that all activities in Europe are well aligned with each other as well as with the global work of OSF.
  • Creates, develops, assesses and applies appropriate tools for advancing goals and for evolving and creating strategic directions.
  • Builds collaborative relationships within and outside OSF that advance OSF’s efforts within Europe.
  • Contributes in significant ways to the development of overall program strategy and conducts research to support program design.
  • Manages projects that include staff within / outside OSIFE which may be regional in nature.
  • Supervises the work of program staff in support of activities, and is responsible for developing and growing skills and capacity within the team.
  • Candidate Profile

  • 10 or more years of progressively responsible experience in non-profit organizations, foundations, government, or academic institutions.
  • Strategic thinker with a deep, personal commitment to open society value
  • Understanding of the implications of the supervisory relationship, and demonstrates the ability and the willingness to handle such relationships properly and respectfully in a manner that fosters both quality work as well as the growth and development of colleagues.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the structure and workings of both formal and informal organizations, networks, and other institutions within varied contexts and as appropriate to the work.
  • Must have ability to exercise measured and appropriate judgment, rooted in analysis and often under circumstances in which insufficient information is available and / or the circumstances are highly volatile.
  • Ability to work successfully as part of a leadership team in both routine and highly pressured contexts.
  • Mastery of analytical approaches and options, and ability to make sound informed judgments.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships in OSF, peer foundations, and with others in the field to further relevant goals.
  • Ability to exercise effective and inclusive leadership and supervision in cross-cultural settings.
  • Proficient written and spoken communication skills in English are important.
  • Our preferred location for this role is Berlin but we would also consider Barcelona as a location.
